Adam Hunt ’03

Major at MMA: Marine Engineering Technology
Employer: Seadrill Americas

Where has your career taken you since graduation?

I have had the chance to travel all over the world, including: Gibraltar, Greece, Oman, Dubai, Thailand, Singapore, Kenya, and Mombasa.

What is your current title and what are your responsibilities?

Now, I am a Technical Leader for Seadrill. Currently, I oversee the maintenance and repair to all vessel systems, oversee Class and Flag State certifications, complete yearly and 5 yearly budget forecasts, maintain the daily, monthly and yearly budgets within company guidelines and plan, execute and debrief after between-well maintenance periods.

What piece of advice would you give to a student going into your field?

The one piece of advice that I would give to a new graduate would be to invest wisely from day one. We have the opportunity to make excellent wages but having and maintaining short and long term goals needs to be a priority. Invest in property, the market, or any other financial tool that is available and with which you feel comfortable.

How did the MMA experience prepare you for both your prior positions and your current career focus?

The leadership skills and structure provided at Maine Maritime within the regiment have stayed within my life, and come through in all aspects of home and work life. Every day the structure plays into my work routine, when planning, executing, and debriefing operations. Leadership is key to managing the technical departments on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico where the leadership and management of teams is completed over long distances via phone and video conferences. Leadership is also key to the management of clear and concise communication when speaking via email, telephone, or video conference.

What are your goals for the future?

My goals are consistently updating and changing as I have added a few new members to my family, including my daughter, who is 15 months, and at least one more child on the way soon. When it comes to work, my goals continue to be, first and foremost, to work, assist, and drive safe and efficient operations for the company while maximizing our technical utilization.

I have also just come off of a year where I completed more than a dozen timed runs, mud runs and even completed some elite events such as the Ragnar Trial and Spartan Trifecta. My personal goal is to run 500+ miles in training as well as complete 5 half marathons in 2018. Running has and will continue to be integrated into my daily life, as well as being a family event that we can complete together.
