Paul A. Gregware ’49
Paul Gregware, aged 96, entered Eternal Life on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Born with a spirit that embraced adventure, Paul was one of only two remaining graduates from the Maine Maritime Academy’s class of 1949, a proud member of a cohort of 48 who persevered from an initial 200 classmates. His maritime education set the course for a rewarding career spanning more than three decades as a merchant marine, a vocation that took him across the globe, where he encountered diverse cultures and embarked on epic adventures.
A man of unwavering honesty and warm hospitality, Paul was a true gentleman in every sense. He had a remarkable ability to connect with others, never meeting a stranger and always leaving a lasting impression of kindness and respect. His love for the sea was paralleled only by his deep affection for his family. The water, which called to him professionally, was also where he forged unforgettable memories with his loved ones.
Paul’s passion for sailing, although not shared with his beloved son, Mark, was relived in their occasional Crown Royal cocktail hour (with a splash of water). Together they would spend many hours reminiscing and telling tall tales, Paul’s ability to listen and make others feel like the only person in the room was one of his most endearing qualities. A tradition dear to Paul’s heart was their annual pilgrimage to Fenway Park, where father and son reveled in the thrill of watching their cherished Red Sox play.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Ditt, Chris, David, and Peter Gregware.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Soon Ja Gregware; daughter, Susan Ross (Andy); son, Mark Gregware (Jessica); grandchildren, Ashley, Megan, Tyler, and Dan; beloved cousin, Mary Ellen Stanton
Paul Gregware leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and integrity. His life was a testament to the virtues of hard work, respect for others, and a boundless curiosity for the world around him. Though he has set sail on his final journey, the memories he created with family and friends will remain as enduring as the waves he once sailed.
