Harold Hugo ’50
Harold Hugo, of South Portland Maine, went to be with the Lord on April 1, 2023 at the age of 94. He was born in Portland, Maine on September 5, 1928, son of Esther and Morris Hugo. He was the youngest and last surviving of 6 children. He was a 1945 graduate of Portland High School, a 1950 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, and a 1957 Graduate of the University of Maine Orono with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He proudly served as an engineer, Lieutenant JG, in the US Navy from 1952-1954.
Harold’s career spanned 30 plus years and included everything from developing rocket nozzles in the 60s to designing and installing HVAC for complex buildings such as apartment complexes, grocery stores and hospitals in his later years. He also spent several years teaching engineering classes in HVAC at Northeastern University.
He was a member of the Masons for over 50 years and spent time as a Lion in Sebago. In 2018, he was awarded an Honor Flight by Honor Flight Maine where he built special memories with his guardian son Paul. In his free time, he loved fishing and building model airplanes and boats. He and his wife Eva enjoyed travelling together to many places all over the world.
Most of all, Harold loved spending time with his family, especially on his beloved Sebago Lake, where he lived for many years. Harold met the love of his life, Eva Sicherova, on the beach in Florida, and married her 70 years ago on April 9, 1953. Together they have two children, Catherine and her husband Jan Janiak of Boynton Beach Florida and Paul his wife Diana Hugo of Spring Lake Michigan. He has one grandchild Cristine Janiak of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. His one of a kind sense of humor, passion for life, friends, and family will be greatly missed by all.
