Clayton E. Nowell ’69
Clayton E. Nowell, 75, of Camden, Maine, formerly of Hancock, died March 28, 2022, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on January 29, 1947, in Bangor.
Clayton attended Brewer High School and later graduated from Maine Maritime Academy with a B.S. in Marine Engineering.
His early career was spent on the sea in the Merchant Marines working as an engineer on sister ships Walter Rice and Inger for Reynolds Aluminum/Alcoa. Clayton eventually retired from shipping to be at home with his family and started a plumbing and heating business in Hancock where his company provided residential services to the surrounding communities for nearly 30 years. He was an avid boater and could be seen all around Frenchman Bay during the summers, entertaining family and friends on his classic style wooden lobster boat.
Clayton was active in the community serving on several committees including the Hancock School Board and the Hancock Point Village Improvement Society. He was very involved with the Union Congregational Church in Hancock, singing in the choir and volunteering his time for the church fair and countless other initiatives. Upon his retirement, Clayton volunteered his time at the Downeast Scenic Railroad where he enjoyed many weekends working on train engines and repairing railways.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marcia Cole Nowell of Camden; son, Chris, daughter-in-law, Melissa, and grandsons, McKeon and Cole of Lincolnville; sister, Joyce Hayden Adams of Brooksville, FL; and nieces, Cindy Goss of Holden, and Diane Whitcomb of Bangor.
He was predeceased by his parents, Madalene and Everett Nowell; brother-in-law, George Adams; and nephew, Scott Adams.
