Maine Maritime Academy Announces the Creation of Chief Operating Officer Position; Welcomes Industry Veteran Craig Johnson to Fill Role
Castine, ME September 26, 2022 – Maine Maritime Academy (MMA), one of the United States’ foremost maritime academies offering degrees in engineering, science, management, and transportation announced that Craig Johnson has been hired to fill the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer.
Mr. Johnson joins MMA from Flagship Management a professional services firm which he founded that provides search and consulting services across various disciplines to the maritime and offshore industries. With decades of experience working in the maritime field Mr. Johnson’s skillset and industry knowledge will help propel MMA into the next phase of operational excellence and external partnerships.
“The creation of the Chief Operating Officer role at Maine Maritime was a crucial step forward as we look to build and increase engagement in external activities such as fundraising, governmental affairs, and strategic partner development,” said President Jerry Paul. “Craig’s specific maritime and engineering industry knowledge coupled with his mind for organizational operations make him a perfect choice to help guide MMA’s external functions in these areas. As an alumnus of MMA, he understands our positioning and shares my vision for a path forward.”
Mr. Johnson–a ‘91 MMA alumnus–has throughout his career developed strategic goals and translated them into action as a consultant to multiple universities and institutions including programs ranging from Offshore Wind to Emissions Studies, to Short Sea Shipping. As a founder of Flagship Management, he knows the employment needs of the companies in the industries served by MMA graduates.
“Maine Maritime is where I started my career. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the Academy and the industry, and I am eager to be a part of the changing landscape of the maritime space.” said Mr. Johnson.
