Frequently Asked Questions

Are Basic Training and Advanced Fire Fighting taught on the same days?

We offer Advanced Firefighting and Basic Training as a dual certificate option; courses are taught concurrently, meaning that content for both courses is mixed in over the course of the training.

Certification for both classes will be issued upon successful completion.

I have questions about my STCW license renewal – can you help?

Only the National Maritime Center (NMC) can provide you with accurate and up-to-date information concerning your Merchant Mariner Credentials.

If you have questions regarding your license, please visit the NMC website. For basic training and advanced firefighting renewal questions, please search ‘STCW Renewal’.

How do the online and hybrid courses work?

We are pleased to now offer both online and hybrid courses to allow you to complete your required trainings at your own pace.

For fully online courses: Once you complete your registration, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to access the online coursework. You may complete the training at your own pace but may be required to finish one module before advancing to the next.

For hybrid courses: Hybrid courses require two steps. First, you will register for Part One of the training; upon doing so, you will receive a confirmation email with details on how to access the online coursework. You may complete Part One of the training at your own pace but may be required to finish one module before advancing to the next. Once you complete Part One, you may register for Part Two of the training. In doing so, you will select the assessment date that best fits your schedule and prepare to complete the requirements in person.

Please note: Maine Maritime Academy uses Canvas as our online learning management platform.
